Questions on Infusions and ABC's of Herbalism

Q: You say drink the infusions one at a time but is it ok to make 2 or 3 and drink them in the same day example oatstraw, nettle and red clover.

Also I am very interested in taking you abc of herbal's course when does it start and do I pay 50.00 per month?

The reason I want to take it is that I am very interested in herbs and healing. It all started with your breast cancer book I had calcifications in my mammo and the dr. immediatly wanted to do a biopsy and I said no so now I am supposed to go back for a repeat mammo in Jan but I just felt that it was not the right thing to do. When I said no to the biopsy he said oK then why did you want me to have it I said, he said so  you know for sure!!!! I said know what for sure, he said nothing anyways hence my interest in your work, I also was very tired of taking vitamins and supplements I want my life simpler than it is, I want to go back to the old ways.

A: Hello,  thank you for writing.  We are so glad you enjoy Susun's work and want to study further with her.  We enjoyed your story; always nice to hear people question and choose for themselves!

Susun's newest correspondence course, the ABC of Herbalism, can be taken any time that best suits you.  As a correspondence student, your course is between you and Susun, so when you start is your choosing. 

If you choose to pay in the ten $50 installments, it would be monthly.  If you pay online through www.ash-tree-publishing.com, the payments will automatically be deducted each month.  You also have the option to pay by mail to Susun Weed at PO Box 64, Woodstock, NY 12498.

You can drink the infusions however you feel compelled.  It is recommended you make one at a time both so that none will go bad, and so that you can get a body feel for each, rather than having them all mixed together.  I used to do it one at a time, then even chose to drink only one for a whole month before doing another for a whole month, etc. helping me to know each more intimately.  After years now of drinking them, and now that I am not the only one in the household who drinks them, I often have two or three going at a time.  This way we can choose what best fits us in the moment.

Comparing the Green Allies and ABC's of Herbalism Courses

Q: Greetings Sister Weed, How is nature treating you. I was very impressed when I saw that you offer a correspondence course for herbology. Please, send me more information on your ABC Herb course. What is the difference between that course and the Green ally course. Do you learn how to make tinctures, poultices, etc. in the ABC Course? If you can send me the required information and registration forms, I would appreciate it. What type of certificate do you recieve upon completion?

A: Hello, thank you for writing with your interest in Susun's correspondence courses!

The difference between the ABC course and the Green Allies course is in focus. Of course there is a similar thread running through all the courses - love of and alliance with the plants and learning the Wise Woman Tradition.

In Green Allies, this connection with the plants is focused on choosing and working intimately with one green ally, though you will also work with some other plants.

In the ABC course you will work with 52 herbs and learn moreso about how to harvest, prepare and use them as medicines and foods. Have you seen this web page on the course?

When you are done with the course you get a certificate of completion for that particular course.

You can order online here. If you prefer to register for the course through mail, send a letter to Susun at PO Box 64, Woodstock, NY 12498, stating which course you are interested in, and giving your address and phone number. Then you include either the full fee or the first $50 payment as you choose.

Susun's Teaching Style and Correspondence Courses

Q: Since I sent in my precious $100, I've been reading on the website and discovered the "Why is Susun angry?" essay. Could I ask you if I should expect her to yell at me on the phone if and when I call her? I need to be prepared to handle it.

**I also have another question. I already own HEALING WISE and I see it is part of the course. Would it be possible for me to substitute another book instead of getting a second copy? Thank you.**

We welcome you as an ABC of Herbalism correspondence course student. Susun will be sending a welcome package, complete with a project booklet and more, very soon. Thank you for the extra payment too. :)

We see that you have signed up for the payment plan. Since we are not able to do the automatic deductions with paypal payments, you have the option of making your payments using the supplement payment option online or by mailing a check to Susun Weed at PO Box 64, Woodstock, NY 12498. You can choose which option you desire each month, and do not need to let us know which it will be :) If you let us know, we can send a payment reminder through paypal to help keep our postal mailing records straight.

It is up to Susun to decide if you can substitute.

I can not promise she will never yell. Susun is very direct. Those who come for apprenticeship ask for the level of growth that requires more confrontation. For those not wishing it she suggests one day classes, or correspondence course. So I doubt there is much to be concerned about. More likely you will find your interactions with her enjoyable. Just as she is direct and passionate, this works towards her joyous passions. I suppose in life it is good to be prepared for anything though.

Learning About Healing

Dear Susun,

Hello. I am a divorced woman and I have five of the most precious gifts anyone could ask for!!! My children. I am going to be very honest with you about who I am.

#1…A woman very dedicated to children.

#2…A healer of unknown talents.

#3…A heart that is wide open.

#4…and a woman that feels out of place here in my family.

I have made many a journey in nature to speak with…Life…. I heard or felt those who chose to respond to my presence. I have witnessed many beautiful happenings and also was shown the sorrow of Mother Earth.  I am at a place where I left my husband and in so doing, had to leave my four boys with their father and my daughter with my mother. I am considered homeless. I do not feel that way because of the connection I found within myself. I feel like I am a fire that keeps getting doused. I knew that the finer parts of me would die if I stayed in the marriage. I did not know that I would rouse my family into thinking that I am way out there and need help. I know what I experienced and it has been difficult keeping that knowing in my being when I am confronted daily with others that really do not know the Love of the Earth personally.  I feel like crying because I miss my kids so much but I know that the ball started and I have to move with the movement.  My heart sounds so great toward the natural healings that my path is split in two. On one side I would die to self to live again with my children and their father. On the other side I feel like the blood of the “people” is on my hands because I am not being the healer Mother Nature knows I am. I know that I have struggled because of the lack of examples that come from the human. I do know that I need to be an example to those that come after me of a Human Being living here on Earth. The bottom line is that I would cherish an opportunity to learn your sacred way. My dream is so huge that it is difficult to express. I gladly let my dreams pass to others so that the dream doesn’t have to wait on me. I want to live in a way that is very connected to the Earth and I found your website. I am unable to find a place to make money because my natural healing gift is calling from deep within and the normal workplace is so hard for me to be in. I am writing to you because I feel I have to try to make connections for my spirit to survive this space here in Kansas…Please, if you are able, let me know if there is a way to be in your sacred area and bring back into practice what I’ve learned to Kansas.

Apprenticing with Children

Hello!

I am looking to apprentice with someone but I have two little girls.

Are there places that you know of where one can have their children? Thank you for your time.

This is a great question, as I imagine apprenticeship with your girls could be a great benefit to the girls!!

Susun's live-in apprentice program is intense, so it would not leave time for the caring of your girls, since you are asked to focus deeply on yourself.  However you CAN study with her through correspondence course and take her one-day classes with your girls along if you feel they are able to focus.  You can also do her live-out apprentice program if you are able to be away from your girls one weekend a month.

I intend to open up my space for live in apprenticeship for families, though will not be ready until next summer likely, so I am sure places do exist :)

ABC of Herbal Medicine from Budapest?

Dear Susun,

I'm very interested in taking the ABC Herbal Medicine Correspondance Course. I used to live in Seattle, and have taken a course with you and with Sally and Eaglesong at Ravencroft.

Currently, I live in Budapest, Hungary, and I will be moving to the island of Hvar, Croatia in January of next year. Is it possible that I can still take the course? I wondered how much information you had about herbs in Eastern-Central Europe. I've already found nettle (my herbal ally), elderberry, plantain and of course, dandelion in the Budapest area -- and that's without really trying too hard. I've also located an organic herb farm on Hungarian-Croat border that looks like a promising source for herbs.

Anyways, let me know. If so, I'll sign up for the course right away, I just wanted to make sure you were comfortable with working in foreign terrain.

I live in Holland. I am very drawn to attenting the correspondance course ABC of Herbalism. It is awaking a part of me that i want to wake up and let it take me on the journey to change me en explore myself. It resonates deeply in me and i gues i will see where this journey will bring me. I would like to receive information about registration or a registration form for the course ABC of herbalism.  I did try it through the website but I got stock and wasn't able to find the registration form for the course. and how I can make payments. Is credit card payment possible? I see only the check part, but that isn't working from Europe I guess, please let me know.

The other question is, do I send in my assignment during this course abc of herbalism? How does it practical work.

Yes, it is understandable to want to ask questions to be absolutely sure. Ask all you want, and don't worry about it :) Here is the link to register online.

You can use a credit card yes. Or you can register through mail with an international money order - just send your contact info and course desires to Susun Weed at PO Box 64, Woodstock, NY 12498. Your correspondence with Susun will be through postal mail and the telephone.

You have the option of choosing what you wish to share with Susun of your lessons and when. I would take the most dominant of them for me and share during our phone conversations and occasional letters to her, to let her know how things were going. During our phone talk time I could also ask the questions that came up during lessons.

All shipping costs are included in the cost of the course. When you register, Susun will send a welcome packet which will include your lessons, and the book list to choose from. Though some books come with the course automatically, she may wait until she receives your book (and tape or audio) selections from the list (through postal mail) to send them all at once to save HER shipping costs :)

Is this what you are asking? If you are inquiring if you should purchase more books in addition to what comes with the course, I would say you will have plenty to keep you busy for a while!!!

Which Correspondence Course to Take?

Q: Susun...hello.

LOVE your website. Spent hours in there this morning. I am on the other side of the US, in Pennsylvania. Right now, dying from working in a cubicle...venturing out to spend the next half of my life doing what I love...working with herbs and plants, healing and nurturing the things in my life.

I am interested in a correspondence course..but I am not sure which would be best for my needs at this time. Is there any that you would suggest? I basically want to use the course as a "jumping off" point..something to motivate me to move on and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a talented and educated herbalist. I am an RN and have cared for people of all ages...I am drawn to infants and eventually want to be caring for those of them spending the beginning of their little lives in intensive care units.....I want to touch them and let them know they are special, loved and welcome. I am studying infant massage...but want to "expand" my knowledge of herbs so that I may offer the parents of these little ones, some form of relaxation and comfort that they do not need to pick up from a pharmacy!

Well..that is my story and fate brought me to your website....if for nothing else...just to know that I am not alone in my beliefs that we are in a wonderful world filled with love and good karma..and women hold a special key to unlock the nurturing gifts left here for us.....

It's so nice to hear you enjoy the websites... and that you are interested to study via correspondence course with Susun! Choosing which of the three courses is a personal decision. I hear you want this course to help motivate you to do as you dream. And I hear you are interested to use your learning to offer care for others. All the course have some basics in common - plant familiarity, herbal use and creation, developing intuitive knowledge, using the Wise Woman Tradition and the 6 Steps of Healing. The three courses differ only in their focus within these topics. Spirit and Practice focuses on how to use the 6 steps and Wise Woman tradition when working with challenges, whether helping oneself or others. Green Witch focuses on honing intuitive, internal dialogue, and developing one's personal spirituality. Green Allies focuses on deepening knowledge of plants, harvesting, preparing, etc. The most popular is Green Witch. I can see how any of the three would benefit you. [As of this writing there is now a FOURTH correspondence course, ABC of Herbalism :)]

Some options to help you decide are our online forum and the correspondence course description packet...

The online forum is incredibly rich with people from all over the world discussing a wide range of topics of interest; with the common thread of course being Susun Weed's teachings and the Wise Woman tradition. Among the many topics to post in (once registered; it's free!) is one called Wise Woman Classroom. There is a space for current, past, and prospective correspondence course students to share with each other. You will see many posts from people trying to decide which to take, as you are doing. You are welcome to read, as well as post if you would like.

The second option is to buy a correspondence course description packet for $10. The packet describes the differences between the courses a little bit further, but most importantly you can see the book lists, from which you choose your course books. This I found the most helpful when trying to decide myself many years ago. I went through the lists and marked all the books that interested me. I then chose my course based on which course's list had the most books marked.

You are certainly a gem among many. Perhaps if you visit the forum and browse, you will feel the web of similar passions that span the world!

Oh yes, the Wise Woman Center is located just a two hours drive north of New York city, so not all that far from you really :) Feel free to write with any questions or thoughts you may have!

Correspondence Courses in the City

Q: Hi Susun,

I have been reading your book, Healing Wise and also own The Wise Woman's Herbal for the Childbearing Year. I am interested in taking the ABC correspondance course and am curious as to what the materials are that I would receive. Would I receive the secrets of the Medicine Wheel of Plant Uses and How to understand and use botany and botanical nomenclature? I feel very novice, I've just discovered red raspberry leaf tea & feel so much better after drinking 20 oz of deep steeped tea a day for the last 2 months that I was compelled to delve into your book Healing Wise....and then to look you up on the web.

I have a concern:
I live in a suburb of Chicago....people are not very weed friendly here...they're very chemical friendly, plus, once I reach a relatively un-touched place where I may find some weeds, I am concerned that the weather might inhibit harvesting.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to communicate with me about this fascinating subject and about my concerns.

A: Hello R., thank you for writing with your interest to study through correspondence with Susun. She does not have internet in her home to be able to receive and respond to email, but I know she will be very happy to work with you.

I understand your concern about living in the city. You may need to be a little more creative than you would if living on many wild acres of land, but I think you will be surprised of all you are able to find, and use! I started my studies with Susun through correspondence course when I lived in San Diego! Not only was it a city with few uncontaminated patches, but it was a desert. I very little time I was astonished to find all the little nooks and crannies and abandoned areas rich with all the plants I was learning about. And soon was harvesting as I thought I would never be able to do there. In Chicago area I know you will soon find all the treasure areas that might right now go overlooked.

So wonderful to hear you are working with such a nourishing herb!
